Clay Sewers Under Colliery Ground

Sewers from the naming waves

The suburb took shape around the Burwood Colliery, open from 1888 until 1982, and the streets named through the 1950s, Kopa and Baroonba included, got clay sewers. The collars on those runs are now where they fail. Shale and reactive clay sit under the ridge, and as that ground swells and dries it works the joints open.

Roots and old workings

Eucalypts on the Glenrock side and the treed rail corridor both send roots at those gaps. Ground disturbed by the mine can also let an old drain shear right through, so a line that looks blocked may be broken. That is why the camera inspection comes before any quote on an older run.

Getting a Price

It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours). That way the number you agree to stays the number.

What moves the figure:

  • What the camera or test finds A root plug in a sound pipe is a lighter job than a sheared joint over old mine ground.
  • The pipe in the ground Clay sewers, galvanised water lines and newer PVC each need their own fittings and method.
  • Getting to it Weatherboard and fibro cottages on piers leave room under the floor, while a slab or a paved yard does not.
  • The hour A call late at night or on a Sunday is priced at a higher rate, set out before we head over.

When we're not the right call: a cracked shower base leaking through a wall is a builder or waterproofer's job once the pipes test sound, and we name the trade to ring.

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

Steel Pipes, Flexi Hoses and Cold Tanks

Water lines in the older cottages

Around the old station site, houses from before 1955 were plumbed in steel, and rust inside those services has narrowed the bore until the shower barely runs. When every tap in the house runs weak together, the service pipe is the suspect, not the fixture.

The Housing closes of 1989 to 1991

These homes are now replacing their hot water systems for the second time, and their braided flexi hoses are old enough to split. On cool, clear winter mornings a tank that was only just coping can give out, and the hot water page covers repair versus replacement.

What Customers Say

Plumbers were friendly, helpful, gave great advice. Very easy.
Cass
They looked after an issue with the hot water system for us. It turned out that the unit was faulty. To ensure hot water, they immediately replaced the unit with a temporary one.
Martin
They were quick to respond, efficient in getting the job done, and the pricing was very reasonable.

Suburbs We Cover Around Whitebridge

The run carries on into five neighbouring suburbs, linked below:

Kahibah is on the run as well. If you are unsure about your street, ring (02) 4915 2998 and check.

Common Questions From This Ridge

Do you charge a call-out fee in Whitebridge?

It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours). Once we are there, the plumber checks the fault and gives you one fixed figure. You decide whether to go ahead, and no work begins until you agree.

Can you clear tree roots from an old clay sewer?

Yes. Roots from the rail corridor and the Glenrock bushland push into the clay joints on this ridge. We cut them out with the jetter or eel, then run the camera through so you can see the joint they came in by and whether relining is worth doing.

Do you repair hot water systems or only replace them?

Both. A failed valve, element or burner on a sound tank is a repair. A rusted cylinder is a replacement, and if the new unit has to be ordered in, a temporary hot water tank keeps the house going in the meantime.

Which suburbs does the run cover?

Highfields, Merewether, Dudley, Gateshead and Charlestown each have their own page, and Kahibah is covered as well. All six sit around the Whitebridge ridge. If your street is close to a suburb boundary, ring and check before you book.

Who looks after the sewer main out in the street?

A blockage in the main under the road or footpath belongs to Hunter Water, not to you. If the camera shows the fault sits past your boundary, we hand you the footage so you can report it to them and their crew can take it from there.

Are you open at night and on weekends?

Yes. Available 24/7 covers nights, weekends and public holidays. Water through the ceiling, sewage in the shower tray or a gas smell in the kitchen all get a plumber whatever the hour, and the price is set out on the phone first.
